Avril Lavigne在2013年的時候確診患上萊姆病（Lyme disease)。受病患困擾下，Avril Lavigne 選擇閉關在家，在飽受精神及身體勞損下對抗病魔。花了5年的時間，在2018年9月5日終於宣佈正式回歸樂壇。並寫了新作Head Above Water。
